In
1979, a bunch of expatriates from Basel, Switzerland got
together in New York to form a casual group,
the New York Bebbi Club.
Our main purpose was to stay in close touch with our home
town and to cultivate our local dialect: “Baseldytsch”.
For many years we were lucky to have our own place in
Manhattan. Besides many social
activities we
also formed a traditional Basel-style drum and fife corps (a
“Fasnacht Clique”).
After
their return to Switzerland, some ex-New York Bebbis started the
New York Bebbis,
Basel, which
has a very lively schedule of activities.They regularly
design and prepare our colorful costumes and lanterns for the
spectacular Basler Fasnacht.This makes it possible for a
delegation from New York to fly over and participate in that
carnival once every two years |
